The Cavapoo Breed
The Cavapoo, also known as a Cavoodle or Cavadoodle, is like a dog that’s always smiling and loves bringing happiness into your life, and I truly mean it! This little furball is constantly cheerful, playful, and always up for some fun. They love to cuddle and give affection, making them perfect companions for anyone looking for a true friend.
They’re super smart, easy to train, and pick up new tricks and commands quickly. They’re patient, gentle, and adore kids – they generally get along with just about everyone. They make great playmates and loyal buddies. Whether you live in an apartment or a house with a garden, they easily adapt to the situation. While they love to run around, they’re also happy to chill when the situation calls for it.
Their coat sheds very little or not at all.
The Cavoodle is the ultimate family pet, winning everyone over with its charming personality and friendly, sunny disposition. It’s a joy to be around.
They’ll most likely feel happiest by your side, though they won’t throw a fit if that’s not always possible. If you’re looking for a fun, loving, and smart dog who could even join you on a hike, the Cavapoo might just be the perfect choice for you!
A few typical “Cavapoo things”:
While they absolutely love being around people, they might show a little shyness at first. They’re super friendly and wouldn’t hurt a fly, but they can be a bit cautious and keep their distance while they get to know you. Don’t worry though, once they warm up, the fun begins!
They’re definitely not cut out for guard dog duty ☺ Chances are, they won’t be the ones to scare off burglars, but they’ll happily sit nearby and watch as the „work” unfolds.
What’s really amazing about them is their empathy. They can sense how you’re feeling and adapt accordingly. If you need a mood boost, they’ll happily cheer you up; if you’re looking for some peace, they’ll curl up beside you or on your lap.
If they rub their head against you, don’t worry, there’s nothing wrong with them. It’s just their way of showing affection. They’re also a great choice for first-time dog owners, as they’re easy to get along with.
Is a Cavapoo a purebred dog?
Technically, not really. A Cavapoo is a conscious mix, bred to combine the best traits of both parent breeds. You could say it’s not a purebred dog, but rather a popular hybrid.
One parent is a King Charles Cavalier Spaniel, and the other is a Poodle. That’s the recipe! Of course, over time, it might happen that one parent is already a Cavapoo, and the other is a Poodle or a King Charles Cavalier Spaniel. In those cases, it’s still a Cavapoo.
The key here is that breeding always starts with a King Charles Cavalier Spaniel and a Poodle. If that doesn’t happen, the puppy won’t be a Cavapoo, and the new owner might be disappointed. Bigger breed clubs haven’t yet recognized it as an official breed, but with its growing popularity, I wouldn’t be surprised if that changes in the future. Some smaller clubs already consider it a breed and even issue pedigree papers.
Breeders who’ve worked with traditional, long-established breeds tend to criticize the Cavapoo. The real reason behind that might be its increasing popularity, though – it’s hard to argue against that. It’s funny to think that the breeds these traditional breeders champion also started as crosses at some point.
The truth is, Cavapoos are super trendy right now, and that might even overshadow some older breeds and the breeders who focus on them. But is the Cavapoo really to blame for that? Or are we just seeing the creation of a new breed? Personally, I think it’s the latter.
How Big is a Cavapoo?
The size of a Cavapoo can vary quite a bit. You might come across a Cavapoo that weighs as little as 4 kg, or as much as 12 kg.
The size of the parents plays a big role here. A Cavalier usually weighs between 5.4-8 kg, while a Poodle (Poodle sizes can vary too) typically weighs between 2-9 kg depending on whether the parent is a smaller Toy Poodle or a larger Miniature Poodle. In some cases, you might have a Medium Poodle parent, and that can bring the size up to anywhere between 9-12 kg.
Here at Stellar Doodle Kennel, we think the Cavapoo should be a small to medium-sized dog. For the perfect size, we’d say anywhere between 4 and 9 kg is ideal. So, for breeding, we’d recommend choosing a Poodle on the larger end of the Toy size or a Miniature Poodle.
What Color is a Cavapoo?
The color of a Cavapoo’s coat can be really diverse, thanks to the parent breeds. Here are some of the more common colors:
Apricot/Peach: Keep in mind that both apricot and red shades can fade a bit over time.
Ruby, Red: The red color tends to fade as they get older, turning into a lovely golden or reddish peach shade. For example, after her first grooming session, Molly’s red coat shifted to a lighter golden shade, while our gorgeous Roxy is gradually transitioning from a deep red to a rich reddish peach color.
Black
Tricolor
Blenheim
Merle
Sable (Cinnamon)
Cream: From my experience, light apricot can gradually fade to a cream color as they age.
The most popular colors are red and apricot, along with their various shades.
Does the Cavapoo shed?
Despite what some ads might say, there’s no such thing as a dog that doesn’t shed at all. All dogs shed to some degree, but some breeds shed less than others. Some dogs’ coats behave like human hair, meaning they shed about as much as we do.
The Cavapoo’s coat can vary because its parents (Cavalier King Charles Spaniel and Poodle) have different fur types. That means it’s hard to predict exactly how much a Cavapoo will shed. But here are a few things to keep in mind:

Is the Cavapoo Healthy?
Well, yes and no ☺ It really depends on the parents and the breeder’s selection process. At Stellar Doodle, we carefully choose the dogs that are part of our breeding program. A Cavapoo from a responsible breeder is likely to be healthy. However, the dog’s health also depends on the owner, as proper nutrition, a good environment, and regular exercise are key. A happy, well-cared-for dog is much more likely to stay healthy!
Cavapoo breeders like to emphasize that “ours is better than the original.” And they might be right, but is that always the case?
At this point, let’s talk about a concept known as hybrid vigor, or heterosis. Simply put, imagine you have two flowers: one red, and one yellow. If you cross them, the seeds may grow into flowers that are more beautiful, stronger, and produce more blooms than either of the parent flowers. This is the concept of hybrid vigor – it’s like getting the best traits from both parents to create something even better.
In the case of Cavapoos, hybrid vigor means that when you cross two different breeds, the puppies are often healthier, stronger, and have better traits than their parents. The genes mix in a way that weak or undesirable traits are less likely to be passed on, while the good traits are amplified. It’s like the puppies inherit the best qualities from both breeds.
Of course, there’s no guarantee, and success isn’t set in stone. The parents still need to be healthy. A reputable breeder will carefully select breeding candidates. If two sickly or weak dogs are paired, don’t expect miracles.
How to Get a Healthy Cavapoo Puppy
Choose a good breeder: Buy a puppy from a breeder who performs health screenings on the parents to check for genetic predispositions. A responsible breeder will remove any dogs with poor health from the breeding program. Since both the screenings and selecting healthy breeding dogs can be costly, the saying „you get what you pay for” definitely rings true here. It’s not worth going for the cheapest option, although sometimes you might get lucky. A responsible breeder will be happy to answer any questions you have later on. Of course, you shouldn’t take advantage of this, but it’s always nice to have someone to turn to, especially in the first week or two after bringing your puppy home. You might have basic questions like: Why isn’t my puppy eating? Why hasn’t he pooped yet? Why is he eating so little? Why is he shy in the first few days? Or when should I neuter him, etc.? A good breeder will have reassuring answers to these questions and will be happy to share them with you.
Honestly, getting in touch with the „breeders” of puppies bought from cheaper places can be tricky. Of course, there are exceptions, but I’ve heard a few stories… It’s always better to buy from someone who does this out of love for the breed. That’s the most important thing.
At Stellar Doodle Kennel, we make sure every breeding dog undergoes a thorough check-up with our vet. The vet confirms whether the dog is suitable for breeding. For males, we also perform DNA tests to rule out PRA, a genetic disease, in the puppies.
What Can We Do to Keep Our Cavapoo Healthy?
Proper Nutrition: You should provide a balanced and healthy diet. If you’re feeding kibble, it’s important to choose a high-quality, premium brand. A true Cavapoo isn’t too big and doesn’t eat much, so you’ll want to go with a high-quality, low-grain food. Of course, a home-cooked menu or even a well-balanced raw diet can be the best option. Kibble is really more for the convenience of the owner, not the dog’s best interest. As far as I know, certain health issues didn’t even exist in animals before kibble became a thing. In many cases, allergies also disappear when the owner switches from kibble to raw or cooked meals.
Regular Exercise: Just like with people, the more they move, the healthier they’ll be. Regular (and the right amount of) exercise will help your furry friend avoid obesity and keep them in good physical shape.
Proper Grooming: Regular grooming is important for their coat, teeth, and nails. For Cavapoos, a groomer can happily take care of this task.
Could the Cavapoo become a widely recognized breed?
For that to happen, it would require breeding consistent traits over several generations, followed by official recognition from a major kennel club (like the FCI), which would involve setting strict standards. It’s a long process.
But the real question is, do we even need that? Or is it the lack of rigid standards that gives the Cavapoo its charm? Maybe that’s something everyone should decide for themselves.
